Challenges to professionalism: Limits and benefits of the professional model
Oslo University College, Norway, September 12 - 13, 2008
Professionalism has been regarded as an important basis of modern democratic societies, but also as an ideology legitimising self-interested monopolies. Addressing the limits and benefits of the professional model imply that these perspectives are considered complementary and important for understanding the challenges to professionalism.
The key themes of the conference are challenges in relation to:
- democracy
- the state and policy makers
- managerial/employer control
- the public/clients
- professional/occupational groups
- education, training and development
- the gendered division of labour
- professional ethics and morality
- professional cultures, identities and commitment
- globalisation
- social theories of professional groups
- research methodology
We invite papers which address these and other challenges to professionalism focusing on either a single occupation and country or based on a comparative perspective.
Registration 1st of April - 15th of June
